The Golf Mk V is full of useful features. Most features are described in the owners manual but usually not explained to reveal the reason behind them. I strongly recommend you read it carefully to get the most out of your Mk V. However, here are some little bits of information I have noticed which are not mentioned in the manual. I have verified most in either my own or other peoples’ Mk 5 VW Golf’s

Convenience opening and closing of the car’s electric windows.

Convenience opening and closing of the car’s electric windows is where you can open or close all windows by holding down either the unlock or lock button on the remote. Whilst you need to continue to hold the unlock button in order to continue to open the windows, if closing the windows, you only need to hold down the lock button until the windows start to close. They will then continue to close fully by themselves.

Hold Unlock Button = Open Windows*

Hold Lock Button = Close Windows**

* You will need to hold the button until sequence is complete.

** you will only need to hold the button until the windows start to close you can then let go of the button and the closure will complete automaticaly.

Climatic Air Conditioning System Automatic Recirculation

When using the windscreen washers and and also whilst reversing, the Climatic air conditioning system automatically switches into recirculate mode to reduce strong odours entering the cabin. This feature is mentioned in the manual but here’s a little more information about it. The LED on the recirculate button does NOT illuminate but if you have the fan set to speed 2 or above you can hear it speed up. Recirculation continues for about 15 seconds after you finish using the windscreen washers.

Clean Tidy Window Wipers

If you turn off your ignition whilst the front windscreen wipers are mid way acroos the windowscreen, they will continue across the screen until parked.***

When the windscreen wipers are turned to the OFF position, the blades move about an inch further towards the bottom of the screen, beneath the bonnet line, out of view and out of the wind flow. Mk Vs with the Auto Wiper function do not need to check this it happens automatically, approximately 10 seconds after the last sweep of the windscreen.

*** This function does not apply to the rear window wiper. When restarting the car you may need to turn the rear wiper on to make it sit in the parked position.

If you would like to add anything to this list please contact using the form below, and we will add your tip or hidden feature.

Window Tinting & The Law.

Window tinting and the laws surrounding aftermarket window tints are ofter misunderstood in the UK modified car scene so its time to set a few things straight . . .

UK Window Tinting and the Law.

Current UK law (2008) states that rear side windows and the backwindow can be tinted to any darkness as required. Tinting of the windscreen must allow at least 75% light transmission. This is 70% in the case of the front side windows. At present this is not checked at the MOT but if stopped by the police you could be fined or as a cheaper alternative asked to remove the film on the roadside. It doesnt matter what option you choose you will still have to remove them so I personally would opt for the removal at the roadside and skip the FINE process.

You can download the full guide below. This has been produced by the UK Veichle and Operator Services Agency, commonly known as VOSA.

 Download Guide

*This guide has been produced in PDF format by overpaid idiots who in their spare time like to go train spotting. You will need to install another program on your machine known as Adobe Reader. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused by the incompetent staff at VOSA (UK).

SECTION 59 was brought in by the Government to target ‘vehicles used in a manner causing alarm, distress or annoyance’ although many people within the modified community believe that the Section 59 law is pretty much an anti-cruising law.

Now although this has never been the official line, it’s fair to say since its introduction it has certainly been enforced at many a cruise. Trust us we know.

The thing is most cruisers have heard of Section 59, but how many have actually read it? Not many we expect. So we thought rather than glossing over it we thought we’d put it up in full.

Yes it looks complicated, but it’s really not. So read it, take note, and why not print this out and keep it in your car? Remember knowledge is power, and there’s less chance of you being treated unfairly at a meet or cruise if you know your rights.

SECTION 59

Vehicles used in a manner causing alarm, distress or annoyance:
(1) Where a constable in uniform has reasonable grounds for believing that a motor vehicle is being used on any occasion in a manner which —
(a) contravenes section 3 or 34 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (c. 52) (careless and inconsiderate driving and prohibition of off-road driving), and
(b) is causing, or is likely to cause, alarm, distress or annoyance to members of the public, he shall have the powers set out in subsection (3).

(2) A constable in uniform shall also have the powers set out in subsection (3) where he has reasonable grounds for believing that a motor vehicle has been used on any occasion in a manner falling within subsection (1).

(3) Those powers are —
(a) power, if the motor vehicle is moving, to order the person driving it to stop the vehicle;
(b) power to seize and remove the motor vehicle;
(c) power, for the purposes of exercising a power falling within paragraph (a) or (b), to enter any
premises on which he has reasonable grounds for believing the motor vehicle to be;
(d) power to use reasonable force, if necessary, in the exercise of any power
conferred by any of paragraphs to (a) to (c).

(4) A constable shall not seize a motor vehicle in the exercise of the powers
conferred on him by this section unless —
(a) he has warned the person appearing to him to be the person whose use falls within subsection (1) that he will seize it, if that use continues or is repeated; and
(b) it appears to him that the use has continued or been repeated after the warning.

(5) Subsection (4) does not require a warning to be given by a constable on any occasion on which he would otherwise have the power to seize a motor vehicle under this section if—
(a) the circumstances make it impracticable for him to give the warning;
(b) the constable has already on that occasion given a warning under that subsection in respect of any use of that motor vehicle or of another motor vehicle by that person or any other person;
(c) the constable has reasonable grounds for believing that such a warning has been given on that occasion otherwise than by him; or
(d) the constable has reasonable grounds for believing that the person whose use of that motor vehicle on that occasion would justify the seizure is a person to whom a warning under that subsection has been given (whether or not by that constable or in respect the same vehicle or the same or a similar use) on a previous occasion in the previous twelve months.

(6) A person who fails to comply with an order under subsection (3)(a) is guilty of an offence and shall be liable, on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale.

(7) Subsection (3)(c) does not authorise entry into a private dwelling house.

(8) The powers conferred on a constable by this section shall be exercisable only at a time when regulations under section 60 are in force.

Well the answer is yes upto now (August) they have been bigger and better than initially expected with record numbers on the ticket sales with the exception of a couple.

Modified car shows and events form a massive part of the modified car scene as all the time and effort would never get seen outside your hometown, They also help bring modified car communities together as most clubs are regional based its hard to meet and engage with people in the scene from further than 50 miles away other than on forums and groups.

Here at The UK Modified Network – Modified Car Club how hard it can be to find whats going on where and when so we have compiled the most upto date list of shows and events in the Modified Car Scene and produced them in an easy to read guide you can view it here : 2010 Modified Car Shows and events

You can also discuss the modified car shows and events in our freindly community by leaving comments below the blog post or in our community forum. Keep an eye out for convoys that may be passing the area you live in and really join in with the show atmoshphere.
